The Challenge

While the design process for this project was exciting and the unfinished space allowed us the opportunity to create several layout options for the homeowners to select from, A challenge included creating an open-concept lower level, while designing a “sound-proof” theater room that would not be heard within the lower level or the floors above. A structural beam was also required above the proposed bar space which provided the opportunity to “get creative” with hiding its identity.

Special Selections, Materials and Techniques Used:

Our homeowners had some special selections in mind when envisioning their bar, that included a thin brick backsplash in Tobacco Road and a custom Walnut top for the upper seating tier. These materials provided warmth and texture, mixed with Onyx stained Maple cabinetry and Macchia Vecchia Quartz counters on the lower tiers. A wood-look tile floor, 8” x 36” Cellar Meld, was selected and installed in a herringbone pattern for additional texture and interest. (4) floating shelves were custom made to match the color of the tile floor and hung on the brick wall for ample space to display this homeowners bourbon collection. Classic black plumbing fixtures were selected by Pfister and Kohler, complimented by the soft touch of Champagne Bronze found within the Amerock cabinet hardware and (3) 8” Progress Atwell pendants hung above the counters. Not to be outdone by the beautiful selections, this bar is complete with 2 beer taps, a Delta glass rinser, and ample wine storage. Above the bar, a beam was hidden by being wrapped in stain-grade material and color matched to the custom walnut countertop below. We all agree, it looks like an element that was done by choice and not necessity!

The theater room was the space that excited the family the most! When complete, it would a space for the family to watch the newest movies and their beloved Buckeyes together. Knowing they wanted the true theater experience, they wanted to ensure the sound would not disrupt other areas of the home, so creating a “sound-proof” environment was important. We achieved this by installing 5” rockwool insulation on the ceiling and 3” rockwool throughout the walls and a solid core door with additional sound deadening features ensured the sound would stay within the theater walls. Custom selected fabric was installed within every other wainscot panel throughout the walls within the room, to provide additional sound support and hide the built-in speakers located within the walls. A 14” platform was built for multi-level, theater style seating with power for all reclining chairs. The walls, ceiling, and trim were painted the rich tone of Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams. Accented by a textural carpet, Making Memories Collection in Cool Breeze by Shaw. Modern, ambient lighting was installed by way of (4) wall-hung Tech Light scones, color changing tape lights, and stair lights for added accent illumination.

The Main Space of this finished lower level was to be the main gathering space for friends and family. Enough space to fit a shuffle board table, a poker table, and an oversized sectional was requested- and achieved! While we have several show-stopping elements within this lower level, we wanted to create a more subtle back drop for the main space so the homeowners furnishings and changing style trends can be the focal point. A soft, neutral shade of Light French Gray by Sherwin Williams was chosen for the walls, with one accent wall in Urban Bronze, also by Sherwin Williams. A soft, plush carpet was chosen from Shaw to add comfort and warmth. A built-in storage cabinet was created using stained Poplar in a Whiterock finish to house the family’s games. The poker table nook turned out perfectly too!
