Patio to Paradise

Project Summary: Patio to Paradise

Our clients wanted to transform their existing backyard into a relaxing and functional outdoor living retreat. They already had a paver patio and built-in grill, but the space lacked shade and specific areas designed for true comfort and entertainment.

The goal was to create a seamless extension of their home, and versatile outdoor environment that could host everything from quiet evenings to large gatherings.

The new covered patio spans over 1000 ft.² and includes distinct zones for dining lounging, and entertaining. The new design features a comfortable TV and social area, a dedicated dining space, an updated built-in grill area with new backyard appliances, and a cozy fire pit zone perfect for year-round enjoyment. The result is a thoughtfully planned outdoor living addition that combines style, comfort, and a design that blends in beautifully with the homes existing architecture.

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges on this project were integrating portions of the existing patio and built-in grill into the new design. Retaining select pavers and finishes require precision and creativity to achieve cohesive aesthetic. While it is often simpler to start fresh, the existing patio was still in excellent condition, making it worthwhile to incorporate into the expanded layout.

Another key challenge was the scale the new structure. At over 1000 ft.², the covered patio addition required advanced framing techniques and careful design coordination to ensure the new construction complemented the homes architecture. Through collaboration and skilled craftsmanship, we successfully blended new and existing elements into a unified outdoor living space that feels original to the home and provides the owners plenty of additional square footage for their entertaining needs.

Special Selections / Materials / Techniques Used

There was a substantial amount of pre-existing paver stones that the homeowners hoped we could leave in place and tie into, when extending the footprint of their patio. After learning the existing was no longer being made in the same color or size, Our skilled hardscape trade partner was able to provide a solution to thoughtfully blend the old and the new.

This created the new footprint to cover roughly 900 square feet of outdoor living space. An existing stone-covered grill area was modified to fit new appliances: 36” Hestan propane grill, 30” Coyote flat top grill, 24” outdoor beverage fridge, and storage drawers. A new Black Pearl Leathered Granite countertop was placed on grill and seating counter. A TV wall was created using matching stone to the existing grill area stone, creating a beautiful focal point full of warm colors and texture. This stone was also used at the base of all the new columns, capped in Limestone, bringing in additional cohesion throughout the space.

The volume of this space should not be underestimated- with a 10’ 9” ceiling height, the ceiling received 6” V Groove material, stained to match the existing front porch ceiling stain, this draws your eye upwards to take in the beauty and character of this material. (2) 60” Fanimation Spitfire outdoor ceiling fans with light kits were installed to keep air flowing throughout the space in the warm months, and for the cooler temperatures (4) Schwank electric heaters were installed.

(4) Kichler black coach lights were installed, selected to match existing and be additional decorative details. This space has everything one would need to host friends and family for a grill out while watching your favorite team- we hope it is the backdrop for many wonderful memories to come!
