Cooking Up a New Look

Project Summary: Cooking Up a New Look

A Kitchen remodel for a repeat customer that included removing a secondary staircase from the second floor to the Kitchen. By doing this, we added additional wall space in the kitchen for more cabinetry, and an oversized linen closet on the second floor for much desired storage for a Family with teens. The Kitchen was the main project, including a new, large fixed window above the Kitchen sink. First floor flooring also replaced, as well as paint, and light fixtures throughout.

The Challenge

We were asked to provide a functional, new Kitchen layout by removing an existing secondary Staircase which ran from the Kitchen to the second floor, and enlarging the opening from the Kitchen to the Dining Room.

The homeowners requested more space for multi-person/multi-function cooking and clean-up, a space where homework can be done and board games can be enjoyed while staying in the existing confines of their current kitchen walls.

Special Selections, Materials & Techniques Used

A 5” Pre-Finished Hardwood flooring by Mullican Nordic Naturals in Copenhagen Oak was first selected to be an impactful and classic transition from the dated, orange-toned hardwood flooring that we were removing. The color is a perfect soft brown that will remain timeless and coordinate well with existing furnishings and new kitchen selections.

The Kitchen Cabinetry and Hood was selected in a rich stain of Smoke on Maple by Aspect Cabinetry to provide contrast with the new flooring tone. This color is the perfect, rich tone of brown with hints of grey undertones. Quartz Taj Countertops were chosen to compliment the flooring and cabinetry while adding lightness and interest with the beautiful movement and tones within the material. A new 59” x 53” fixed glass window was installed above the kitchen sink to provide an abundance of natural lighting and makes the space feel even larger. A light grey toned, textural backsplash tile from Roca in Greenland Frost was selected for the perimeter of the kitchen and to surround the window which brings additional lightness and interest with the subtle texture within each individual tile.

New Stainless appliances were installed and a motion-sensor Moen Kurv faucet was chosen in Stainless to compliment the appliances. A Blanco Silgranit sink in Truffle was sourced to perfectly blend with the Taj Quartz and remain a functional and durable item in this kitchen, with its scratch and stain resistant qualities. Brushed Nickel cabinet hardware by Top Knobs were chosen with a blend of knobs, handles, and pulls throughout to create a truly elevated and customized look. Wishing to add more high-design qualities throughout the space, we opted to mix metals with the lighting fixtures.

Lighting throughout the kitchen, eat-in dining table, and foyer were chosen in Black with a classic modern flair. We love how this space feels effortless, yet perfectly tailored and high-end, yet approachable for this large family who loves to cook, entertain, and spend quality time in the heart of their home. The Before and After’s speak for themselves!
