The Challenge
The renovation was for a repeat client and began with a clear goal in mind – Transform a dated closed off layout into a warm, spacious, and highly functional gathering place for family and friends. The existing Kitchen was constrained by structural post set in the center of the island, an eyesore that disrupted the flow and limited both seating and storage. The homeowners dreamed of an open inviting space with room to entertain, better connection to the outdoors, and a layout that worked at effortlessly for everyday living.
By removing the dividing wall between the Kitchen and the Dining Room, expanding the window over the Kitchen sink to showcase views of the backyard and pool, and eliminating the intrusive support post through strategic structural engineering, we were able to dramatically open the first floor living space. The redesign space now features a generous island with plenty of space for seating, a dedicated beverage center, and gorgeous double doors leading into a walk-in pantry. A new arched opening connects the Kitchen to the existing pool bar area, creating a natural indoor-outdoor entertaining flow. Hardwood floors were refinished throughout the first floor and ceiling beams were added to discreetly conceal mechanicals that were previously inside the wall (which was removed).
Special Selections / Materials / Techniques Used
The existing first floor hardwood flooring was sanded and refinished as part of this project. Removing the existing orange tones and bringing the floors back to life with a Bona Medium Brown stain was the catalyst to the surrounding selections within the kitchen. Maple cabinetry by Aspect was selected in a soft white tone of Tundra for a classic and timeless backdrop to anchor the other selections. The large island, wood hood, and floating shelves were chosen in Maple with a Tavern stain- warm and inviting and a perfect accent to the wood flooring color. Onice White Quartz was chosen for the counters and the full height splash throughout the main kitchen space. The material’s non-porous qualities provide a functional and durable surface for all the cooking and entertaining this family enjoys.
A 3” mitered edge was fabricated for the island to bring added drama to the island and create a beautiful statement piece. This added thickness shows off the beautiful subtle gold veining throughout this soft grey and white Quartz. A brick-look accent tile by Jeffery Court in Dias was chosen for the backsplash at the Dry Bar within the open Dining Area to help define this space as its own- the warmth and dimension this tile provides is stunning! The Plumbing fixtures were selected from the Moen Smyth collection in Bronzed Gold, which perfectly pulls the gold tones from the countertops. A composite sink in Truffle by Blanco replaced their previous stainless-steel sink. The sink sits in front of a new 6’ wide window, double the size of the previous window, providing additional natural light and a great view of their pool and backyard. (2) sconces in Natural Brass by Bellevue were installed above the window for accent task lighting, (3) oversized 18” textured ceramic pendants from Crate and Barrel were placed above the island, and a beautiful 30” wood beaded chandelier from Pottery Barn was installed above the refurbished dining room table.
Top Knobs in Honey Bronze cabinet hardware was placed throughout the cabinetry to further connect the plumbing, lighting, and countertop tones. The pantry space also received an update as we installed new base cabinetry in Designer White by KCD and floating shelves above to match. A Wilsonart Laminate counter in Lisola with a fieldstone finish was installed to create a perfect landing spot for the microwave and coffee maker.
Custom stained pocket doors that feature a soft arch within the glass inlay were chosen to add an extra touch of elegance and coordinate with the arched opening to the mudroom that was also created during this project. This kitchen has all the classic elements of natural wood tones, texture, and warmth, as well as being functional. We love the transformation that this kitchen underwent and hope it is the backdrop to many wonderful family memories!
